Private Charles Wright
The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present, other than that at some point after the war, he lived at 171 Vernon Street, Belfast.
Charles Wright enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 18 January and 16 February 1912 (No.668 – later Corps of Hussars 71064). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.
Wright remained with the regiment through much of the war.
In February and March 1918 the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, including A Squadron, was dismounted and converted to a cyclist regiment, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps for the remainder of the war. This meant a 25 per cent reduction in the regiment's numbers, and it is likely that this was the time that Wright was transferred to the 8th (King's Royal Irish) Hussars. Later he joined the 19th (Queen Alexandra's Own Royal) Hussars.
On 30 April 1919 he was discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service, having suffered impairment since entry into the service (paragraph 392 xvi(a), King's Regulations).
